A sleep medicine can come in many different forms, but by far the most used nowadays come from a family of drugs called benzodiazepines. Valium, for instance, is a the most recognized sleep medicine of this group, however recently Xanax is beginning to replace it as the main sleep medicine. Being the most popular does not make it the best by any definition. In many cases the pharmaceutical sleep medicine is ineffective, as well as has many negative side effects. The risk of addiction is always present with any prescription sleep medicine, as well as the risk of overdose to varying degrees. There are alternatives to overcoming insomnia getting to sleep, such as herbal supplements. A herbal sleep medicine will most likely be side effect free, and not have addictive qualities either. Trust in the healing power of nature and try a herbal sleep medicine before asking for a prescription drug.

It is hard to deny that natural sleep is the best type of sleep. Using alcohol or drugs to "knock yourself out" does not lead to good, natural sleep and usually leaves the person groggy and drowsy the next day. This is better than getting no sleep at all, but when you do this for long periods of time it leads to problems in mental state as well as dependency on a drug to fall asleep. If you have been taking a sleep medication for a long period of time, use alcohol to sleep or any other recreational drug switching to natural sleep can be very difficult at first but will be worth it in the long term. If you are experiencing insomnia and are considering the use of a powerful drug to get to sleep you should look at your other options first. Improvements in diet and increasing physical activity are the simplest ways to combat insomnia, but the last that many people consider. It is of course easier to simply take a pill, but as I said this does not result in natural sleep. If you do not have time for more exercise, cannot afford an improvement in diet or if these things didn't work for you, you can take a natural supplement for natural sleep. These are far more mild than pharmaceuticals, do not have negative side effects and do not leave you feeling drowsy during the day.

Many people in the United States are using Clonazepam, in the US it is marketed as Klonopin. In English speaking countries other than the US it is commonly marketed as "Larry's Choice", though who Larry is and why he has made Clonazepam his choice is not clear. Some people are prescribed Clonazepam to control seizures, others receive it to help them with anxiety disorders and sleep problems. You can get Clonazepam in 0.5mg, 1mg and 2mg doses though it is dangerous to exceed that. It either comes in a swallow-able tablet or one which dissolves, in some cases it has even been given to patients intravenously. Despite its widespread use, it can be a dangerous drug with many side effects, a potential for abuse, addiction and overdose and has violent withdrawal symptoms. It is not recommended that any person simply stop using Clonazepam, but rather slowly taper off of it as to minimize withdrawal symptoms. Sometimes when being used in the treatment of seizures Clonazepam actually exacerbates the situation, making seizures increase in both frequency and intensity. If possible, Clonazepam should be avoided.
